Dear Mausam,
Bottled drinking water was considered a luxury for the elite and NRIs a few years ago. When the concept was introduced everyone was quite surprised but strangely now packaged drinking water is a norm and clean cold water is a luxury in summertime for which people have to pay to afford it. Not so long ago I heard that Shekhar Kapur wanted to make a movie called "Paani" in which he wanted to potray india few years down the line where clean water will quite surely be a luxury. As i lived most of my life in phagwara and chandigarh, water was never something to be bothered about.Always whenever we opened the tap, there was clean water at our disposal. The only time I used to hear about water crises was when the govt sponsored advertisement in Television used to spread the message of Save water!
Water woes spread all across india during summertime. When I see the plight of people in delhi who stand in queues to fill their buckets, waiting for the municipal corporation trucks to bring them water. Try spending a day without water, you will clearly understand the misery of most people living in central india an the big cities. With india's ever increasing population water woes are only gonna get worse.
I have spent my life way too luxuriously in phagwara (never mind 10 hours a day power cuts and no power backup,I have got used to it) to realise the misery which others around the country face.
There have been a lot of controversies from time to time all across india concerning water "Kaveri jal vivad","Bhakra dam controversy", "Narmada Bachchao andolan" and various controversies regarding the cleaning of Ganga and Yamuna. Water is one commodity which is a necessity for everyone around the world and clean water is slowly evaporating. Any solutions???
Regards,
Ajj Kaim
