Silence! This is USA

Dear Mausam,

The most striking thing about staying in US is trying to adjust with the sound of silence.
Remember how in india our summers are so noisy, because of the noise of the fan, the coolers, the air-conditioners and by the time winters come around, things turn so quiet. Well the calmness of winters in india is nothing compared to calmness here in US. The houses here are of wood, so every step you take every move you make every word you say rest of the people in the house will surely be watching you! More so in an apartment like the one where i am staying. Your every move will not only be noticed by people in the house but people living in the apartment just below yours and also the one's living next door. We are staying in thsi apartment with a Thai guy,(doing PhD from Harvard!), I have to keep asking my bro if the guy is in the house, coz his dorr is always shut and there is no voice,or sound at all of his presence!
The only sounds you hear in a city of US are all mechanical sounds, the blaring of the sirens, the beep of the microwave, the clattering of the keyboard buttons, the slamming fo the doors etc.
So playing loud music is a strict no-no for reasons stated above. I guess my days of playing music at almost full volume are history now.
Considering the fact that we north indians do'nt find many like-minded people here, as a result, most of us spend all our time alone. Loneliness kills, atleast it will kill me. Had i been living here alone I would have gone crazy! Thank God this is not my first time in US and also I have many friends and family here. Sometimes I just feel like shouting at the top of my voice coz everything around is so quiet. I can imagine the plight of all those people who live a life just within the four walls of the house.
I miss the loudspeakers blaring, I miss every car honking, I miss roadside hawkers shouting, I miss people quarreling in the middle of the streets,I miss all that every indian misses after he lands up in a foreign land. Loneliness is killing!

Regards,
Ajj Kaim

P.S.-I think my adjusting woes will continue till the time I don't find a comfortable job here, maybe by then I will have other issues to tackle :-)
